SUPREME COURT IS SUPREME IN LEGAL INTERPRETATION

The legislature legislates but it is the Judiciary that interprets that legislation and decides that it is in conformity with the letter and spirit of the Constitution presently in force.

UNSEEMLY AGE CONTROVERSY UNCALLED FOR
By Chitranjan Sawant
The case of age of General Vijay Kumar Singh, Chief of the Army Staff, is not as simple as it looks on the surface. Having had a look at the story and suporting documents from the beginning to the end, one is bound to say that maintenance of service records of an officer by two important branches of Army Headquarters is faulty. Let it be done by one branch in future and customarily it should be the Adjutant General's branch. As of now, General VK Singh’s service records maintained by the Military Secretary’s branch shows the year of birth as 1950 whereas the records maintained by the Adjutant Genera’s branch shows it as 1951. The High School certificate that mentions the final date of birth gives it as 1951. The entire documentation done thereafter sticks to 1951 uniformly as the authentic year of birth. Surprisingly it was not challenged by the individual officer at any stage of Service nor was it done by Army Headquarters
Beating Retreat is a grand spectace of band music. Rather West oriented, it sprang a surprise by playing VANDE MATARAM

VANDE MATARAM PLAYED IN BEATING RETREAT- 2012
By Brigadier Chitranjan Sawant,VSM
VANDE MATARAM, the national song of India that is Bharat, made a debut in the Beating Retreat ceremony 2012. It was a treat to hear the instrumental music of the national song at the Vijay Chowk, New Delhi for the first time on 29 January 2012. What a peasant delight that the Indianisation of the musical ceremony of an hour took a step forward and rendered the instrumental version of Vande Mataram on Shahnai and Tabla. The audience thought that it was recorded music but it was not so. Both the Shahnai and Tabla players sat in an invisible corner at the end of the North Block and mesmerised the music-loving crowd of spectators. The additional effect of music came to life through a judicious use of microphones producing the desired level of sound and echo.
