According to modern science, new fertile soil formation is by disintegration of rocks made possible by microorganisms, and the fresh soil is brought down in the waters flowing in the rivers, and deposited in the plains. Nourishment of the plants/vegetation in the new fertile soil by chelation of water solubles present in the fertile fresh soil is also made possible by microorganisms present in the soil.

Note on Vedic Maruts and modern science of Microbes

Sir,
Devatas in Vedas represent a subject matter, which is like laws of science, universal, secular, unchanging and without any exceptions. The Rishis visualize that subject matter, like for Mechanics- Newton, or Relativity- Einstein.
All the Suktas pertaining to one Devata with the connected Rishis, can be collected. Their study in a scientific context can not only open many secrets about the physical sciences in the Vedic texts, but also suggest new lines of inquiry and strategies for making a study and research.
Maruts in Vedas, represent the subjects covered in the sciences of Biotechnology, & microbiology.
Maruts in Vedas are always referred to in multitude, as an army Marut ganas. Modern science also confirms that the microorganisms are present in infinitely large numbers on the earth, estimated at 10 raised to the power 31 ( by American Society of Microbiology). Vedas mention the number 10 raised to the power of 512 as the maruts in the universe. According to Vedas, Maruts are of many different varieties, shapes, sizes and colors. The outer space is the birth place and habitation of Maruts, from where they come to earth. They take birth, multiply, and die, but are born adults, always in youth, not going through phases of infancy and old age. Scientists find the microbes like the Vedic Maruts of different bright, multicolor, shapes and sizes. 'Griffith' in his translation of Vedas refers to Maruts with resplendent multicolored bejeweled medallions with their weaponry, to fight its enemies. Maruts have sonic, electrical, optical qualities. (Shankh is blown to purify the pooja place to destroy bad germs.) Maruts are voracious eaters of cooked food & grow in numbers exponentially.
Maruts are all beneficial organisms which destroy malefic organisms. Modern science calls such microorganisms as Probiotics. Maruts cause disintegration of rocks for Fertile Soil formation & organic agriculture, treat sewage and waste for disposal, like the microorganisms.
All these modern scientific attributes of the microbes, are directly talked about Maruts in Vedas. Some of the topics which modern microbiology is yet to explore and Vedas frequently talk about are like:
1. Vedas say all naturally born maruts are good ones and different from disease carrying germs. Modern science having gone to microbiology by medical route made a start with disease control strategies through antibiotics, and is still not very focused on life supporting microorganisms, the Probiotics. It is only very recently that ASM (American Society of Microbiology) and FAO have suggested the study of Probiotics as a new strategy for future by disease immunity and control.
2. Vedas want to know which the good Maruts are and what distinguishes them from bad ones. What motivates the actions of Maruts, and how to look for them? This is what modern science also wants to research about microorganisms.
3. According to Vedas, Maruts create big sounds under the earth. When these earth shaking noises are heard, living beings get scared of immense catastrophes- as if Veda is suggesting a method for early detection of large earthquakes by monitoring underground sonic signals.
4. Maruts can convert desert and waste lands in to fertile and good lands. This is perhaps indicative of making artificial rains in deserts.
5. Vedas also suggest that the study of microbiology should start with the study of Milk formation from fodder, in the three rumens of a COW.
(These are only very preliminary and amateurish musings from a person trained in engineering disciplines.)

By a study of the Marut Suktas of Rig , Yaju and Atharv Vedas, there are many such possible frontier areas where scientists could find new lines of enquiry, and research in modern microbiology, The American Society of Microbiology, and FAO have only very recently initiated work on investigating PROBIOTIC microorganisms, as a strategy to develop immunity and disease fighting ability of human body. This precisely is the type of work which is indicated by Vedas and followed in Ayurveda.
About 500 Mantras relate directly to Maruts, and there are also large numbers of mantras which relate to Maruts by linkage to other Devtas. Modern science would term this as interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary. All these ideas would warrant scientific validation. A multidisciplinary group of Cytological/ microbiological experts from pathology, botany, agriculture and chemical engineering, meteorological engineering with the help of one or two Vedic scholars, could devote time to look in to the Vedas for fresh insights. Based on the report of these scientists further research work in laboratories can be taken up.
The entire work could be split in to two parts.
1. Theoretical analysis to throw up scientific ideas requiring, further work by scientists, environmental, agriculture and material science experts.
2. Scientific Validation and formulation of possibly new areas of investigation.
From the modern information, it appears that the American Society of Microbiology and FAO are both working on the strategy to give a new orientation to Nutrition and medical science by proceeding on PROBIOTIC and PREBIOTIC strategies. 1
There is also a new strategy to use COW as a starting point of researches in to Nutrition and health areas.2
The Geochemistry in the Rhyzosphere is pursuing the subject of harvesting heavy metals from sludge and polluted waters.
3
Treatment of Sewage and polluted waters through marine life and secondary crops is a new NASA promoted technology, which is again very clearly suggested by Vedas.
4
These are all areas which are very clearly suggested by Vedas. But in stead of just pointing out to what has already been discovered is not a big deal. It will be worth an effort if in India we can find some newer strategies by studying these leads in Vedas.

On interpreting Vedas
It is well known, by traditions of our Epics Ramayana, Mahabharat and large Puranic literature, that numerous references are found there, to modern day technologically developed devices, such as Aeroplanes the Pushpak Viman of Ramayan,Video Conference of Sanjay in Mahabharat, The terrestrial weapons and Missiles , The Plastic Surgery and so on.
But the post Mahabharat, dark ages have nearly wiped out all our knowledge achievements. It is a ridiculous claim to day that our Vedas are the repositories of all true knowledgIe, and that includes scientific knowledge also.
The earliest help available for interpreting Vedas is from Yask. Yask also perhaps belongs to a much later post Mahabharat period, as he also does not insinuate any scientific knowledge threads in his works. ( at least in the form of science recognised by us to day)
What we inherit to day, are mainly spiritual interpretations or predominantly ritualistic traditions, of perhaps a very small part of our original Vedic Scriptures. A modern scholar like an internationally renowned scholar, Frits Staal in his very erudite writings, refers to our presently followed Vedic traditions, as "Rituals and Mantras - Rules Without Meaning", and gets away with it, with hardly any Indian scholar making even a feeble attempt to disagree. Still Yask makes a very important observation to help us in the scientific study of Vedas.
+ªÉÆ ¨ÉxjÉÉlÉÇ ÊSÉxiÉɨªÉÚ½þÉä%¨ªÉÚgø:*%Ê{É ¸ÉÖÊiÉiÉÉä%Ê{ÉiÉEÇòiÉ:xÉÃiÉÖ {ÉÞlÉCJÉäxÉ ¨ÉxjÉÉÊxÉ´ÉÇHòªÉÉ:*|ÉEò®úhÉ¶É B´É iÉÖ ÊxÉ´ÉÇHò´ªÉÉ:*

The main point made by Yask is that before an attempt is made to find an interpretation of Ved mantras, it must be made in a specific context.
In the present case by looking looking at Ved Mantras, when we start searching for microbiological context, in Marut related Suktas a definite direction emerges. This has been the strategy in trying to understand Vedic Maruts, in this note.Help has been taken from Ved Bhashyas of Swami Dayanand, Shri Satavlekar and Griffith.

Namaste
The wonderful efforts done by you can really raise the spirits of future lovers of VEDAS. Its really a big effort !.

In addition to the requirement of " A multidisciplinary group of Cytological/ microbiological experts from pathology, botany, agriculture and chemical engineering, meteorological engineering with the help of one or two Vedic scholars" I think there is a need for scholars, who are completely devoted to the spritual urge and have the main aim of universal welfare for deriving the best results from Vedas .The selfish attitudes can't research any novel ideas from Vedas, which have a universal value, because they can't touch its soul. In this regard your article may act as beacon of light for our young lovers of VEDAS.

You have mentioned very highly about 'Marut'. May I request you to kindly throw more light on this, for persons like us who are Sanskrit illiterate.

Apko bahut bahut Dhanyawad aise Uttam gyan ke liye.

----The above building blocks इष्टक:; may be like cows to me ,गिनती करने में, सन्त्वेका च दश like one to ten 10(raised to the power 1) च दश ten tens=10(raised to the power2)100,(शतं च शतं च सहस्रं ie=10,000=10 (raised to the power4) ten thousands( here it may kindly be noted that according to this Yajurved mantra Sahasra is ten thousand and not one thousand as normally taken in popular arithmetic) In Vedic arithmetic as indicated by this mantra the next measure is the squire of the previous term) च सहस्रं च सहस्रं चायुतं=10(raised to the power 8) चायुतंच नियुतं= 10(raised to the power16)च नियुतं च प्रयुतं=10( raised to the power32)चार्बुदं = 10(raised to the power64) च न्यर्बुदं =10(raised to the power 128) च समुद्रश्च=10(raised to the power256) मध्यं being the mid oceanचान्तश्च=10(raised to the power512) परार्‌ध्द्‌श्चैता to outer space.
एताः इष्टः अमुत्र च अमुश्मिन्नलोके मे धेनवःसन्तु, so many are the building blocks in this universe. ASM has estimated number of microbes on this earth as 5X10(raised to the power31). whereas Vedas are mentioning a much higher number ie. 10(raised to the power 512) as the number of Maruts in this entire Universe.-Modern science has a long time to catch up with science in Vedas.
So many of these building blocks in this world and outer space, may be like cows to fulfill my needs
Microbiology is indeed a very new science. According to ASM (American Society of Microbiology) in Frontiers of microbiology BSCS2006"The sheer number of microbes on earth is staggering. It has been estimated by ASM that we share the planet with 5X10(raised to the power31)microbes, which weigh more than 50 million quadrillion tons, constituting nearly 90% of earth's mass.
According to Vedas as described in details in various Ved Mantras, the various properties of Maruts like being live organisms, different colors, shapes, sizes, being sensitive to optics, sonic and electromagnetic fields, capable of gene transfer, voracious eaters, growing in numbers exponentially, being Probiotic. Microorganisms are also enemies of life like disease bearing pathogens and have to be destroyed by antibiotics.
Vedic elemental forces are always benevolent and Maruts are no different. In Vedic terminology the enemies of life ( disease bearing pathogens) that are destroyed by Maruts under the leadership of Rudras.
The large numbers of these ishtakas as related to the infinite numbers, that Vedas are talking about in this Yajurved mantra can relate only to the microbes in the entire universes.
Thus second mantra is the key 'Rosetta Stone' the to the suggestion that Maruts are indeed related to microorganisms of all kinds, which the modern science is yet in the process of identifying and studying.
Note. The Vedic system of numbers is also a very clear strategy to use squares after ten, ten tens ie hundred, hundred hundreds ie Sahasra again Sahasra Sahasras ie squared and then the resulting number is called AYUTAM. An Ayuta is a square and so on. Thus the Vedic system deals with numbers far beyond the concepts of modern number systems.

It is astonishing ! How

It is astonishing ! How ISHTAK (the equivalent of building blocks) have been calculated for their numbers. How the number count in Mantra so easily and so clearly deals with such an exhaustive count beyond limits. Further so many other fundamental truths are declared so easily. Only thing it requires is a Ved Drashta, a Rishi to find and pass it on to the human beings.
Bahut 2 Dhanyawad Adarniya Subodh ji Aapka.

Anand

Personally, I feel Gurukul Kangri will be most fortunately disposed in working on such a project, to make the dream of Maharishi Dayanand a reality, that Vedas are the repository of all knowledge, and also establish a new concept about the relevance of Vedas in the world.
As a starter, I am to enclose here with some of my independent personal interpretations of Ved Mantras from Yajurved 17th Chapter, and some Marut Suktas from RigVed. The scholars at your Gurukul, may have a close look at this effort, and comment if it is worth while to pursue for further & more refined work,on this line of reasoning to look for moder science leads in Vedas.
