Sri Ram was a Great Man – not God

In Vedas, principal Upanishadas, Darshans (upangs), and Manusmriti etc. it is clearly mentioned that Almighty God (Ishwar = Brahaman = Parameshwar = Paramatma) is formless, invisible, unborn and Omnipresent reality.

Unfortunately because of lack of true understanding of the Vedic scriptures for last 2-3 thousand years ignorance about God’s true concept has been spreading, as a result of which majority of Hindu today believe that God incarnates, and He assumed human bodies like Rama & Krishna etc. in past.

The Vedas and other true Vedic scriptures don’t promulgate any theory of God’s incarnation.

In the beginning of “Valmiki Ramayana” there is an opening dialogue between Narad and Valmiki about the great MAN existing at that time in the world – “maharshe tvam samarthosti jyatumevam vidham naram” means it is questioned that who is a great MAN with righteousness, great character, good-looking etc. This is asked by Valmiki to Narad. This shows that basically here in this Ramayana Sri Ram has been described as a glorious great MAN, and not as an incarnation of God. It was not Valmiki’s intention to project Sri Ram as God.

One should also think over the following evidences of Valmiki-Ramayana:

1. In Ayodhya kand (105.15) of Valmiki Ramayana, Rama has shown that he was a MAN and not GOD - “natmanh kamkarosti….”

2. In Yuddha kand (118.5) after getting Sita freed, he told that - I as a MAN got victory over this trouble – “daiv sampadito dosho manushen maya jith…”.

3. Once he declared categorically that – I do believe that I am a son of king Dasharath only – “aatmaanam manusham manye ramam dasharathatmajam”. (Yuddha kand: 110.11).

4. During search-operation of Sita once he told Laxman that - I must have committed many bad actions (karmas) in my previous life, and therefore I have to face pains - one after another in this life – “purvam maya nunam….papani karmaanyaskrut kritani…” (Aranya kand: 63.4).

5. Sri Ram was a great spiritual person devoted to Almighty God. One may refer Bal kand (13.3 “kaushalya supraja….”) and (23.3 “tasyarsheh paramodaram vach-h….”) in which it is mentioned that Sri Ram performs ‘Sandhya’ (prayer and meditation of God) and ‘japa’ (meaningful – meditative repetition of prayers to God) like Gayantri-mantra etc.

To think and believe that Sri Ram was a great MAN and not GOD is not to be taken as his insult or under valuation; rather it is a real assessment. Then only we may be able to judge his real greatness and get lot of inspiration from his true great biography. Any thing that pollutes the true concept of God should be sincerely forsaken.
