One should try to understand these facts about Geeta:

(i) Geeta is basically a part of Mahabharat - Bhishma parva. It is not an independent book. On the text of Mahabharat Swami Dayanananda has written in the 11th chapter of Satyarth-Prakash as under:

"It is clearly written therein (= in the historical work "Sanjivani" by Raja Bhoja) that Vyasa composed 4,400 verses of the Mahabharat, and his pupils added another 5, 600. Thus there were in all 10,000 verses in the original Mahabharat. In the time of Raja Vikramaditya the number of verses rose to 20,000. Raja Bhoja says that in his father's time the number came up to 25,000 and at the time of writing the book under notice, when he was a middle aged man, it had risen to 30,000; if it went on increasing at the rate the Mahabharat will in no time become a camel's load."

Geeta - being integral part of Mahabharat - is also tampered in the same proportion. That is why it is to be read with due precautions.

(ii) To understand the style of Geeta (being a poetic composition) particularly where First Person is used in describing God one has to refer these two aphorisms of Vedant-Darshan (Brahmasutra) : 1.1.29 & 30. (Ref: Indra-Pratardan dialogue). In these two aphorisms Maharshi Vyas has given necessary hints about such style of expression. It is also said in Kaashikaa (2.3.11): "Mukhya sadrshah pratinidhih" - means a representative expresses / displays himself as if he is identical to whom he represents for effective communication. However both are fundamentally different persons. That is why we see such words used in Geeta - aham, maam, matparayan etc.

(iii) In Geeta (18.61 & 62) it has been very clearly stated that God is Omnipresent dwelling in the hearts of all Souls and one should surrender to Him only ("tamev sharanam gachchha sarva bhaven Bharat") for peace and liberation from misery and pain. However it is very unfortunate that such shlokas of Geeta are not being properly propagated among the masses.

क्या मनुष्य जीवन बार बार मिलता है ? तो क्यों नहीं सत्य को जानने का प्रयत्न प्रत्येक व्यक्ति करता है ? इसी में उसका अपना हित भी निहित है व सबका हित भी जागरुक रहने में ही है, अन्धकार में नहीं |
