Udbhodhan

(Chant elongated O-M three times)

He param pita paramatman! Aaj ham bhakti se namra ban kar aapke charnanon men aaye hain. Aapko hriday men dhaaran kar ham apane man our aatmaa ko pavitra banaate hain. Aapki sharan men rahkar ham apane durgunon ko dhonaa chaahate hain. He dinbandhu, kripa sindhu prabhu! Aapke upar shraddhaa our vishwaas rakha kar aapki kripa se ham is bhav saagar ko sukh purvak paar kar saken.


He sachidaa nand swarup bhagavaan! Ham nish paap man se yahaan aapki prarthanaa upaasanaa karne upasthit huye hain. Hamen sad budhi dijiye; hamen sanmaarga dikhaaiye; satkarma ki taraph prerit kijiye.
Invocation

O lord! With all humility and devotion we have assembled here to offer our prayers to thee. With thee placed in our hearts we desire to purify our mind and soul. In thy care and protection we wish to wash off our sins. O friend of the poor and ocean of mercy! With faith and trust in thee may we be able to complete the end of our life’s journey happily. O source of all intelligence and bliss! We sit at thy feet with a clear conscience. Grant us wisdom, show us the path of righteousness and enable us to perform true and noble deeds.
Sandhyopasanaa

(The Twilight prayers)

Before commencing the daily twilight meditation and prayer, wash and clean your body. Having selected a secluded, neat and calm corner, take a comfortable seat. Sit in a convenient posture(asana), keeping the backbone erect and eyes half closed. Take three deep breaths(pranayamas). Recite the gayatri mantra given below:
Gayatri Mantra

Om bhoor bhuvah svah.
Tat savitur varenyam bhargo devasya dhimahi.
Dhiyo yo nah pracho dayat.

Tu ne hamen utpanna kiya. Paalan kar rahaa hai tu.
Tujh se hee paate praana ham. Dukhi yon ke kashta hartaa hai tu.
Tera mahaan teja hai, chhaaya hua sabhi sthan.
Srishti ki vastu vastu mein tu ho rahaa vidya maan.
Teraa hi dharte dhyaana ham, maangte hain teri dayaa
Ishvara hamaari budhi ko, sreshtha maarga par chalaa.
Aachamanam Mantra

(The First Symbolic Sipping of water)

May the gracious, radiant and omnipresent Om, for achievement of our desired happiness and perfect bliss, shower happiness on us from all sides.
Indriya sparsha Mantrah

Take some water in the palm of our left hand. Wet the tips of the middle and ring fingers of your right hand. Touch parts of your body (as indicated) while reciting the following text:-

Om vaak vaak.
First the right side of mouth and then the left side.

Om praanah praanah.
First the right nostril then the left.

Om chakshuh chakshuh.
First the right eye then the left.

Om shrotram shrotram.
First the right ear then the left.

Om naabhih.
The belly button

Om hirdyam.
The heart

Om kanthah.
The neck

Om shirah.
The head.

Om baahu bhyaam yasho balam.
First the right arm then the left.

Om kartala kara prshthe.
First the palm of the hand and then the back side.

Lord I pray for vitality and glory to my organs of speech and inhaling and exhaling breath, to my eyes and ears, to my navel and my heart, to my throat, head and arms, to the palm and back of my hands.

Maar janam Mantra

Take some water in your left hand. Sprinkle it with the middle and ring fingers- both together- on the parts of the body (as indicated) while reciting the following text.

Om bhooh punaatu shirasi.
On head.

Om bhuvah punaatu netrayoh.
On eyes.

Om svah punaatu kanthe.
On neck.

Om mahah punaatu hirdaya.
On heart.

Om janah punaatu naabhyaam.
On belly button.

Om tapah punaatu paadayoh.
On the feet.

Om satayam punaatu punah shirasi.
On the head.

Om kham brahma punaatu sarvatra.
On the whole body.



May the self-subsistent lord purify my head! may the all-seeing lord purify my eyes! May the blissful lord purify my throat! May the great lord purify my navel! May the stern and righteous lord purify my feet! once again I pray to the truthful God to purify my head. may the all-pervading lord purify me end to end.

Pranayam Mantra

Om bhooh. Om bhuvah.
Om svah. Om mahah.
Om janah. Om tapah.
Om satyam.



The lord, whom we adore and on whom we meditate, is self subsistent, all knowing, all bliss, all-mighty, maker of all things, stern in justice and truthful.


Agha marsha nam Mantra

Om rtan cha satyan chaabhee ddhaa tapaso dhya-jaayata.
Tato raatrya jayaata, tatah samu droarna vah.|1|



Samu draa darnavaa daddhi samva tsaroajaaya ta.
Aho raat raani vida ddhad vishv asyamish to vashee. |2|



Soorya chandra masou ddhaatayatahaa poor vama kalpa yat.
Diva ncha prithi vee-n chaanta riksha matho svah.|3|



The almighty Om, who is supporting, protecting and conrolling the whole universe, creates the world and all physical beings just in the same manner as in the previous cycles of creations, in conformity with the good or evil done by souls in their previous existence. Laws of nature, as well as moral and social laws, sun, moon, heaven, earth, space, planetary worlds, day, night and all other moments are the result of his omnipotence. May we keep this infinite power of his and feel his presence in every place and every moment and keep ourselves away from committing sins.

The second sipping of water

After resolving to do away with all sins either in thought world or deed, totally, the performer should now recite the text ‘om shanno devih’ again and sip water thrice as before.


Om shanno devee rabhish taya aapo bhavantu peetaye

Shamyo rabhi sravantu nah.

may the gracious, radiant and omnipresent om, for achievement of our desired happiness and perfect bliss, shower happiness on us from all sides.
Manasa parikrama Mantrah

A mental vision of God and feeling neighbourliness with him.
Om praachee dig agni radhi pati rasi to rakshi taa dit yaa isha vah.

Te bhyo namo addhi pati bhyo namo rakshi tri bhyo nama ishu bhyo nama ebhyo astu.
Yo asmaan dve shti yam va yam dvish mastam vo jambhe dadh mah. |1|

Coninuous progress and advancenent in our first aim. May we, like our lord, be full of true science, unfettered and protectors. may our thoughts be free and sublime, so that we may gain this aim in our life. May we be able to turn even our enemies into our friends with the help of these noble qualities.


Om dakshi naa dig indro dhipati stirashchi rajeerakshi taa pitaraisha vah.
Te bhyo namo addhi pati bhyo namo rakshi tri bhyo nama ishu bhyo nama ebhyo astu.
Yo asmaan dve shti yam va yam dvish mastam vo jambhe dadh mah. |2|

Ability and efficiency, is our second object. may we truly be masters of our senses and be able to control crookedness. Let us submit to the scholars spreading true knowledge so that we may achieve the objiect and even our enemies may become our friends.


Om pratee chee dig varuno dhi patih prdaa koo rakshi ta anna misha vah.
Te bhyo namo addhi pati bhyo namo rakshi tri bhyo nama ishu bhyo nama ebhyo astu.
Yo asmaan dve shti yam va yam dvish mastam vo jambhe dadh mah. | 3|

Turning away from worldly desires and pleasures is our next aim. May we be pure and free from all kinds of sins. May we have courage to challenge all sins and fight them out. Let us earn food by fair means and be friend to all.


Om udee chee dik somo dhi patih svajorakshi taa shani risha vah.

Te bhyo namo addhi pati bhyo namo rakshi tri bhyo nama ishu bhyo nama ebhyo astu.
Yo asmaan dve shti yam va yam dvish mastam vo jambhe dadh mah. |4|

Sublimation of ideas and thoughts is our forth aim. May we, too, like our father, be calm, quite and unperturbed. May we be strong to free ourselves from all ill feelings and vices. Let us submit to him and accept his award gladly so that we may be pure at heart and never feel inimical to any one.


Om dhru vaa dig vishnu radhi patih kalmaa shag reevo rakshi taa veeru dha isha vah.
Te bhyo namo addhi pati bhyo namo rakshi tri bhyo nama ishu bhyo nama ebhyo astu.
Yo asmaan dve shti yam va yam dvish mastam vo
jambhe dadh mah. |5|

Mental stability is our fifth cardinal point. May we, like the almighty, be pious and feel our own self in every creature. May we, to, know good deeds and righteous paths and advise others, to follow them likewise. Let us benefit others, as the trees and plants do and be effectionate to all.


Om oordh vaa dig br haspati radhi patih shvi tro rakshi taa varsha misha vah.
Te bhyo namo addhi pati bhyo namo rakshi tri bhyo nama ishu bhyo nama ebhyo astu.
Yo asmaan dve shti yam va yam dvish mastam vo jambhe dadh mah. |6|

Our sixth and last object is to attain spiritual supremacy, may we be superior to others in knowledge and deeds. May we be mentally pure, energetic, honest and true so that we can attain the loftiest bliss! Let us ascend to the highest like clouds and be benevolent to all those who are poor and suffering and shower pleasure, peace and prosperity upon them so that they may love us and we may love them.


Upa stha nam Mantrah

Om ud vay am tamasa spari svah pash yanta utta ram.
Devam deva traa soorya maga nma jyoti rut tamam.|1|

May we realize and secure communion with the supreme self, devoid of all darkness, full of all bliss, survivor after universal dissolution, the illuminer of all that is luminous, the soul of the universe and the best effulgence!


Om udu tyam jaata veda sam devam va hanti keta vah.
Drishe vishvaa ya soor yam|2|

God is the revealer of the vedic knowledge, the fountain of all light, the maker of all things. Cosmic phenomena and the vedas do, as sign-post, point out to him. On this lord we meditate for knowledge of the universe.


Om chitram devaa naamuda gaada neekam chakshur mitra sya varuna syaagneh.
Aapraa dyaava prithi vee anta riksha gm Soorya aatmaa jagata stasthu shashcha svaahaa|3|

May we have the vision of the lord, who is the soul of the entire universe and is pervading all worldly objects and planets and impels them all. He helps those who are free from all kinds of jealousy and hatred, are treading the path of righteousness and are ever progressing. He is ever shinning in the hearts of the enlighened who possess divine qualities.


Om tach chakshur deva hitam pura staach chhu kra muchacha rat.
Pash yema shara dah sha tam jeevema shara dah shata gm shri nuyaa ma shara dah shatam prabra vaama shara dah shatam bhooya shcha shara dah sha taat.|4|

The omnipotent om, who is the benefactor of righteous and learned persons and observing all at every moment, was pious even before the creation. He is and will remain omnipresent, omniscient and omnipotent even after annihilation of the world. May we see him, hear him and his virtues, and pray to him only to live in this World for hundred years and even more withut suffering any humiliation or being dependent on any one.


Gayatri mantra

Om bhoor bhuvah svah.
Tat savitur varenyam bhargo devasya dhimahi.
Dhiyo yo nah pracho dayat.

Ishwara is cause of our existence and is dearer to us than our life. He ever keeps all his devotees deserving final emancipation and striving for it, aloof from all evil and gives them their desired bliss in ‘this’ very earthly life. He permeates the whole universe, keeps all beings under conrol and is abode of all. We should entertain him in our souls with the utmost love and devotion, He is the creaor of the whole universe and the bestower of power upon his devotees. He is the illuminator of the souls of all and imparter of all bliss. He is ,most acceptable, and he is pure intelligence. may he always safeguard our intellectual feculties from all evil that we might otherwise fall into, and lead them on to do only what is good.


Samarpan Mantra

He eesh vara dayaa nidhe! bha vat kripaya anena jap opaasanaa di karma naa dharmaartha kaama mokshaa naam sad yah sadhir bhave nnah.

Oh Ishwara! May we, by thy grace, soon achieve righteousness, good riches, good desires and sa,vation, by revering and adoring thee.


Namaskaar Mantra

Om namah shambha vaaya cha mayo bha vaaya cha namah shankar aaya cha maya skar aaya cha namah shiv aaya cha shiva tar aaya cha.

Our adoration to God, the blissful and the giver of all bliss, to the tranquil and the giver of tranquility; to the all-joy and the giver of joy!
