SECULARISM IS A SHAM AND COMMUNALISM A MISNOMER

SECULARISM IS A SHAM AND COMMUNALISM A MISNOMER

1. AUM.
2. By Brigadier(Retd) Chitranjan Sawant,VSM

Secularism was indeed pertinent to Europe when monarchs or kings wished to be freed from the clutches of the Roman Catholic Church and rule their countries without the interference of Pope of Rome. The word is a misnomer for India where some disoriented political parties used it for Hindu bashing and appeasement of Muslims and now Christians too to collect the votes of minorities.
The Indian National Congress in Jawaharlal Nehru’s times formed an alliance with the morbid communalist party, Muslim League that was instrumental in forming Pakistan, to form a govt in Kerala. Is that Congress a secular party? The Communist govt in Kerala shook hands with the same Muslim League and conceded the Muslim majority district, Mallapuram, to remain in power; are they secular? Never.
The Congress party under Rajiv Gandhi had thousands of Sikhs murdered in cold blood in 1984 holding the entire community responsible for assassination of Indiara Gandhi but the same Congress is after Modi’s blood when both Hindus and Muslims were killed in Gujarat subsequent to burning alive in train Karsevaks returning from Ayodhya; is that Secularism? All bunkum and just rubbish.
It is vote-bank politics and Hindus must consolidate their votes and just ignore the communal Muslims.
3. The Media could have set things right and helped the common man see things in correct perspective. Unfortunately the system of paid news has forced reporters and even correspondents see events with a blinkered eye. Moreover, the owners of newspapers and electronic media that is TV stations are mostly businessmen and a businessman is naturally interested in profits. If the TV channel concerned fetches a good TRP, it attracts Ads and Ads bring money. So any serial that shows SEX and telecasts lurid details of copulation earns money. No wonder sx related serials fetch good TRP and that means money.
4. Thus news and views take a backseat. In the Group discussion, such journalists or laymen are invited who do not call a spade a spade. Criticism of the ruling party is frowned upon and their leaders, especially the Lady who runs the show is treated as a holy cow. Apparently the news and views toe the official line and are ever eager to get govt Ads as it brings along mullah. Thus the reader reads in the print media what the ruling party wants him or her to read. The electronic media telecasts sub-standard serials to entertain the common man so that the real criticism is not telecast or it takes a back seat.
5. The leadership of major political parties are interested in showing a good image of theirs. So they take the pressmen and the lensmen on the right side by showering expensive gifts on influential journalists come Holi or Diwali. Money makes the mare go and there are stories to show that a good amount of cash changes hands to keep the mouths of critics shut. It is not so in India alone. Even the journalists of advanced countries of the West too have fallen for the silver that was shunned by poets of eminence in England when they declined the nomination to the post of Poet Laureate lest the independence of the Muse was compromised.
6. In the Iraq War the US government had introduced what is known as “Embedded Journalism” Eminent war correspondents lived with the officers of the combat units and naturally were dined and had wine with them day in and day out before filing their Exclusive stories from the war front. It is but natural the wine and delicious dishes made a mark on what the embedded journalists filed and their papers published.
7. Coming back to India that is Bharat and clumsy terminology Secularism and Communalism, we find stories in the national dailies that have been seen through coloured glasses. Thus anything can pass for any thing. The less said the better.
