One fine morning I boarded the Ajmer Shatabdi Express at New Delhi. It was on the insistence of Dharmvir Ji, Mahamantri of the Paropkarini Sabha that I was going there on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the tragic demise of Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati to deliver a lecture on the Life and Times of the great religious and social reformer and also to compere a special session where bigwigs like Swami Ramdev Ji Maharaj and Shri Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Chief Minister of Haryana were scheduled to offer their Shraddhanjali to the seer and founder of the Arya Samaj. Indeed it was his untimely demise under tragic circumstances that moved and motivated millions to change the course of their lives for the better.

Swami Dayananda with a flag - Is it judicious?

We find that Swami Dayananda Saraswati (1824-1883) is shown in many pictures and photos with a long flag of AUM (OM) holding in his hand. Based on my little study of his biographies I personally believe that Swami Dayananda never took any flag in his hand. He was not a “Zandadhari” – upholder of any flag. Yes, only once in Kumbh fair of 1867 (Samvat 1923), he unfurled a distinctive flag named - “Pakhand Kandini Pataka” or “Pakhand Khandan” - means a flag for denunciation of frauds & superstitions. That flag was also not in his hand, but he mounted it on his location - (perhaps on a tree?) under which he was addressing the orthodox gathering.

Swami Dayananda Saraswati (1824-1883), founder of Arya Samaj, mentioned in the eighth chapter of his world famous book Satyarth-Prakash (Light of Truth) that God created human being first time in the area of Tibet. He has not given any scriptural evidence for the same.
